Learning Center Mission Statement

The SUNY Corning Community College Learning Center supports the college's vision and mission by providing our students with high quality academic assistance that fosters personal growth, critical thinking, academic success, and life-long learning. Our professional and peer tutors from across the disciplines offer respectful and non-judgmental consultation to individuals or small groups. We collaborate with faculty from all academic divisions, and our flexible learning environment provides academic, occupational, and technological resources that help students achieve their goals.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Learning Center

 

1. What is the Learning Center?

The Learning Center is a place for students to learn in their own way and achieve their college goals! We feature free individual and small group tutoring for all CCC students, covering a wide range of subject areas. Additionally, we offer a flexible study environment with different kinds of student-centered spaces for collaborative or solitary work. Students can take advantage of many helpful academic resources and technology aids, including use of our Assistive Technology Lab. Our tutoring services and many of our other resources are also available online. Get the help you want with daily homework, essays, projects, exam preparation, and enrichment of essential college skills.

 

2. Who can use the Learning Center?

  • Any student currently enrolled in a SUNY Corning course. Our tutors also serve ACE students in their ACE courses
  • Students from a wide variety of courses, especially any courses with significant reading, writing, math, or science components
  • Students of any ability level who are motivated to succeed and gain enrichment
  • Students who are struggling with coursework and want to get back on track

 

3. Where is the Learning Center located?

The Learning Center has two locations: one on the upper level of the Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library on the Spencer Hill (main) campus (LIB111), and the other with limited hours at the Elmira Center (ELM111).

 

4. When is the Learning Center open?

View each tutor's shift and location for any specific day: Math tutors' hours, Science tutors' hoursWriting tutors' hours, and Additional subject tutors' hours. Hours for each break week and final exams week will be posted on our Hours page and in a MyCorning announcement.

 

5.  Can I get help when I'm not on campus?

Yes. We have remote tutoring options during our open hours, including video chat with screen sharing through Google Meet, as well as phone tutoring. Live online tutoring through the STAR-NY Consortium is available from 7 pm to midnight, Sundays through Thursdays. Tutors from SUNY colleges offer support in Writing, Math, Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Economics, Nursing, Nursing Math, Computer Science, and Accounting.

 

6. Should I make an appointment or just drop in?

Drop-ins are still welcome if you have a sudden question or need, but we encourage students to make appointments for all live in-person and remote sessions so as to guarantee our ability to help you in the most timely manner.

 

7. When should I visit the Learning Center?

  • Any time you wish to review course content or practice related skills
  • At any stage of the process for your assignment or to prepare for an exam
  • Whenever you want to get work done efficiently, either with support or independently, using our spaces
    equipped with technology, textbooks, helpful guides, and other resources

 

8. Who will be working with me?

  • Professional tutors in the areas of writing, math, science, and accounting.
  • Peer tutors trained in the relevant subject areas

 

9. How can the Learning Center's professional and peer tutors help me?

  • Understanding & reviewing course content

10. What should I bring when I work with a tutor?

Any of the following would be very helpful, though not required:

  • Your assignment and textbook
  • Any notes, preliminary exercises & relevant materials
  • Drafts, any instructor feedback, or graded work
  • Specific questions and concerns about your assignment

 

11. How long or frequent might my tutoring sessions be?

Tutoring sessions are flexible and may vary in duration and frequency. When booking appointments, you may choose a session length of 25, 40, or 55 minutes. During busy times, we may have to "multi-task" between several students or limit the frequency of sessions in order to meet the needs of all of our students. Once your session with a tutor is completed, you may stay and work independently as long as you wish during our open hours. If you need additional help, please feel free to let us know, either by knocking on our office door or approaching us while we're working with another student. We'll do our best to accommodate your needs along with those of the other students, but our main goal is to help you gain an even stronger set of skills to eventually gain more independence.

 

12. Do you keep a record of my visit to the Learning Center?

Yes. We will email you a form that includes the date of the session, the tutor’s name, and may include notes about ideas covered and advice for future work. It is up to you if you wish to forward these emails to your instructor. Most instructors love to know you are getting extra help, and it might help them know how to support you further.

 

13. What is the Assistive Technology Lab?

Located in room L114, the Assistive Technology Lab is a designated space for you to explore the assistive software and hardware available to you through CCC. We provide demonstration and help with such resources as speech-to-text, text-to-speech, digital note-taking, remote conferencing, Brightspace tools, and more.

 

14. What other resources does the Learning Center offer?

  • Study rooms for small groups or individuals, equipped with whiteboards and connective technology, including computers with webcams and document cameras, TV monitors, and more
  • Handouts and video tutorials containing guidelines, quick tips, and practice exercises for different kinds of math, science, writing, citation, study strategies, and more
  • Computers, printing, and Wi-Fi
  • Microscopes with slides, other science specimens, and hands-on models for studying chemistry and biological anatomy
  • Free access and support with several kinds of assistive software to help students with diverse needs successfully engage with their academic content
  • Easy access to library materials and help from librarians, including help with books, databases and other electronic media, laptops (including for semester-long loans), calculators, course reserve textbooks, interlibrary loan, and more
